Notes - Emily Cecelia Paul was born July 30, 1900, the third child of Thomas William Paul and his wife Amanda Susan Becker. She was a member of a family which had already lived in East Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County, PA for over a hundred years at the time of her birth. The farm on which she and her siblings were born and raised had been her grandfather Paul's and her father Thomas had also grown up on this farm. In 1919, Emily married Samuel Edgar Behler and the two lived in the Paul household until about 1925 when Emily and Samuel moved their young family to the Behler farm right down the road.
Emily would give birth to nine children in the first twenty years of her marriage. Her son, Arlin, talked fondly of growing up on the Behler farm. Although at times it was very difficult financially the memories of her oldest child were filled with a love and a longing to return to those days. It could not have been an easy life but Emily was able to bring joy to it all. Emily and Samuel had to move their family to New Jersey sometime in 1940. They were unable to keep the farm and New Jersey offered a new job to Samuel. Reluctantly for some and with joyful anticipation in some of the younger children the family moved to Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey.
Not too long after the move to New Jersey, Samuel and Emily moved their family once again to a house atop a hill in Mt. Olive Township, New Jersey. Marguerite, Emily's daughter-in-law remembered the move to this house as she was staying with the family while her husband, Arlin, was in the Philipines. As children we often heard the story of how Marguerite went through the ceiling of the attic on moving day. Samuel passed on at the age of 54 of a heart attack leaving Emily with her youngest children, three teenage girls, still at home. Money must have been tight at the time as I believe, Emily lived soley on her benefits from Social Security. With resolve and emotional support and help from her older children, Emily was able to finish raising her children.
Emily moved again to Lake Hopatcong for a couple of years and then once again to Mt. Olive where she lived two blocks from the house she and Samuel lived at, which was now owned by Emily's son Robert and his family. Unfortunately, Emily suffered from diabetes which slowed her down immensely. It was December 18,1964 while recuperating at her daughter Jean's house from a hospital stay that Emily suffered a fatal heart attack. Her family was devastated but Emily's own great faith saw the family through and we all knew she would now reside with Samuel in the loving arms of their Father in Heaven.
Emily Paul Behler was one terrific grandmother. As one of her grandchildren I remember her ready smile, her great cookies, her teasing, her busy hands (she was always sewing or cooking or something), and her genuine warmth. We all still miss our "mammy" but the gifts of faith, love, and laughter that she gave to us all will never leave us, they will continue to be passed on from one generation to the next. [1] - There are 5 living children that need to be identified as well.
