      OKLAHOMA 74447-9678.

TRADER, LIVED IN LOGAN AND LINCOLN COUNTIES, OKLAHOMA BUT TRAVELED IN
MANY COUNTIES WHILE TRADING AND DOING AGRICULTURE WORK. HE TRAVELED IN A
COVERED WAGON TAKING HIS FAMILY WITH HIM.

BERTHA, HIS DAUGHTER, TOLD US MANY TIMES ABOUT LIVING IN THE WAGON BECAUSE
HER FAMILY FREQUENTLY TRAVELED. SHE SLEPT UNDERNEATH THE WAGON. THEY
ALWAYS CAMPED BY WATER AND WHERE THERE WERE TREES IF POSSIBLE. BERTHA
REMEMBER ALWAYS HAVING SEVERAL HORSES WITH THEM. SHE SAID HAMP WOULD
      TRADE HORSES WITH ANYONE.

ACCORDING TO BERTHA, HAMP OFTEN SAID ABOUT HIS WIFE, MINNIE SHERMAN,
"COME DAY, GO DAY, GOD SEND, SAMEDAY."

BERTHA SAID, "IF DAD [HAMP] GAVE YOU HIS WORD IT WAS AS GOOD AS GOLD."

BERTHA TOLD ME IN JANUARY 1996 THAT HAMP TOLD HER AND HER BROTHERS AND
SISTERS THAT HE WAS OUT RIDING ONE TIME AND THE MIST WAS SO HEAVY HE
COULDN'T SEE WHERE HE WAS RIDING. SO HE UNSADDLED AND BEDDED DOWN FOR
THE NIGHT. NEXT MORNING WHEN HE GOT UP HE COULD AN INDIAN SWINGING BACK
AND FORTH IN THE DISTANCE. HE HAD BEEN HANGED EARLIER EITHER BEFORE OR
AFTER HAMP BEDDED DOWN. HAMP TOLD THEM THAT HE RODE AWAY FROM THEIR AS
      FAST AS HE COULD.

HAMP PLAYED THE FIDDLE. ACTUALLY HE WAS PRETTY GOOD AT IT. KAY, HIS
GRANDAUGHTER SAID HE PLAYED IT SEVERAL TIMES AFTER HIS VISITORS ASKED
HIM. PRESTON SR., KAY'S HUSBAND WAS AT HIS HOME ONE TIME WHEN KAY ASKED
HIM TO SHOW PRESTON HIS FIDDLE. HE DID AFTER HE WENT IN HIS BEDROOM AND
GOT IT. HIS FIDDLE HAD BEEN WELL USED. EVERYONE THERE THEN ASKED HIM TO
      PLAY AND HE DID.

HAMP BOUGHT HAY FROM GLEN CAUDLE, PRESTON SR.'S DAD, BEFORE PRESTON SR.
JOINED THE NAVY. HAMP WAS DRESSED AS USUAL IN HIS WESTERN CLOTHES, HAT
AND BOOTS. HE WAS LEAN AND TALL, A WESTERN MAN, AN OLD TIME OKLAHOMAN.
DAD SHOWED HIM THE HAY IN THE BARN. HE ASKED DAD WHAT KIND IT WAS AND DAD
ANSWERED ALALFA. DAD LIKED HIM. THEY TALKED AWHILE AND THEN HE LEFT
COMING BACK LATER WITH TWO OF HIS BOYS TO LOAD AND HAUL THE HAY.

HAMP TOLD PRESTON SR., SOMETIME IN 1960, WHEN HAMP AND HIS WIFE MINNIE
CAME OVER TO BERTHA AND CLYDE'S HOUSE TO EAT DINER AND SEE THEIR NEW
GREAT-GRANDDAUGHTER MELITA, THAT HE WAS OUT RIDING ONE DAY WHEN HE SAW SOME
MEN THROWING AND CATCHING A BASEBALL IN MEEKER, OKLAHOMA. HAMP SAID IT
      LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE HAVING FUN SO HE STOPPED; HE WATCHED AWHILE;
HE DROPPED THE REINS OF HIS HORSE ON THE GROUND; HE UNBUCKLED HIS GUNS
HANGING THEM ON HIS SADDLE HORN; HE STEPPED OVER WHERE THE MEN WERE
THROWING AND CATCHING THE BASEBALL. LIFTING HIS HANDS LIKE HE WAS READY
TO CATCH ONE, HE WHISTLED TO THE MEN SIGNALING THAT HE WANTED THEM TO THROW
HIM THE BASEBALL. HE SAID, "SURE NUFF," THEY THREW IT TO HIM. CUPING HIS
HANDS AND MOVING THEM BACKWARDS LIKE HE SAW THEM CATCHING THE BALL, HE
ATTEMPTED TO CATCH THE BASEBALL. HE SAID THEY MUST HAVE THREW IT HARD
BECAUSE WHEN IT HIT, INSTEAD OF CATCHING THE BASEBALL IN HIS CUPPED HANDS
LIKE HE INTENDED, IT HIT THE ENDS OR TIPS OF HIS FINGERS JAMMING THEM
BACKWARDS INTO HIS HANDS. HAMP SAID HE NEVER KNEW ANY WORSE PAIN IN HIS
LIFE. HE SAID THE TIPS OF HIS FINGERS HURT AWFUL. HE WALKED OVER TO HIS
HORSE; FUMBLING, HE BUCKLED HIS GUNS ON; PICKING UP THE REINS, HE CLIMBED
UP IN THE SADDLE; HE COLLECTED THE REINS GINGERLY IN HIS INJURED HANDS; HE
NEVER SAID A WORD; WITH HIS HAT IN THE SKY, HE RODE OFF; HE NEVER LOOKED
BACK. TO THIS DAY HE TOLD ME, THAT HE HAD NEVER PLAYED A GAME OF OR
CAUGHT A BASEBALL; HE "SURMISED" THAT HE NEVER WOULD.

THAT SAME DAY, HAMP ALSO CUSSED PRESIDENT WOODROW WILSON FOR BREAKING HIS
PROMISE TO "THE AMERICAN PEOPLE" BY SAYING THAT THEY WOULD NOT HAVE TO
FIGHT. LATER, AFTER THE GERMANS SINKING OF AMERICAN SHIPS, PRESIDENT
WILSON HAD A CHANGE OF HEART. NOW, HE SAID THAT AMERICANS WOULD HAVE TO
FIGHT BUT THAT THIS WAR WOULD BE A WAR TO END ALL WARS. HAMP SAID THAT
PRESIDENT WILSON LIED THROUGH HIS TEETH. HAMP HAD NO USE FOR HIM BECAUSE
WORLD WAR II FOLLOWED CLOSE ON WORLD WAR I'S HEELS. IN EFFECT HE LIED
TWICE: ONCE BY SAYING THAT AMERICANS WOULD NOT HAVE TO FIGHT. AND AGAIN
BY SAYING THAT WORLD WAR I WAS A WAR TO END ALL WARS.

BERTHA SAID THAT AFTER HAMP DIED SHE WAS VERY MUCH CONCERNED ABOUT HIS
SOUL. ONE DAY AS SHE WAS LOOKING OUT OF THE KITCHEN WINDOW SHE SAW HER DAD
WALK BY IT TWICE: BOTH TIMES SHE SAW HIM HE WALKED THE WAY SHE
REMEMBERED HIM WALKING. AFTER THINKING ABOUT IT AND REALIZING THAT GOD DID
NOT WANT HER TO BE CONCERNED ANYMORE ABOUT HAMP'S SOUL, SHE CONCLUDED THAT
THIS WAS GOD'S WAY OF TELLING HER THAT IT WAS WELL WITH HAMP'S SOUL. SHE
ALSO SAID SHE SAW CLYDE, HER HUSBAND, AFTER HE DIED, SITTING IN HIS
LAZYBOY RECLINER. HE TOLD HER TO GET ON WITH HER LIFE THAT HE WAS OKAY.
SHE REALIZES NOW THAT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THESE TWO EXPERIENCES ARE:
      (1) SHE KNEW THAT CLYDE HAD ACCEPTED CHRIST JESUS AS HIS LORD AND SAVIOR
AND, AS A RESULT, IS NOW WITH GOD; (2) SHE DID NOT KNOW THIS ABOUT
      HAMP, HOWEVER.

ON THE NIGHT THAT HAMP DIED PRESTON MILFORD SR. AND KAY CAUDLE DROVE TO
CHANDLER, OKLAHOMA TO PICK UP KAY'S COUSIN, DONNELLA YATES AND HER BOY
FRIEND, SO THEY COULD GO WITH THEM TO THE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL IN
OKLAHOMA CITY TO SEE HAMP. CLYDENA WAKLEY, KAY'S SISTER, MAY HAVE GONE
WITH THEM. HAMP WAS KAY'S AND DONNELLA'S GRANDFATHER. SOMEWHERE ON 23RD
STREET DONNELLA'S BOY FRIEND ASKED PRESTON SR. TO LET HIM OUT SO HE COULD
GET HIS PICKUP TRUCK. HE SAID HE WOULD MEET THEM LATER AT THE HOSPITAL.
WHEN PRESTON SR., KAY, AND DONELLA WALKED INTO THE HOSPITAL, THE FBI, WHO
WERE ALREADY THERE WAITING FOR THEM, STOPPED THEM. ONE OF THE AGENTS
INTERVIEWED DONELLA SEPARATELY. ANOTHER, INTERVIEWED PRESTON SR. AND KAY.
THE FBI TOLD THEM THAT THEY WERE LOOKING FOR DONNELLA'S BOY FRIEND AND
ASKED THEM WHERE HE WAS. THE FBI TOLD THEM THAT DONNELLA'S BOYFRIEND WAS
WANTED FOR DESERTION FROM THE U. S. NAVY. THE FBI AGENTS INTERVIEWING
THEM WERE VERY COURTEOUS. THEY ASKED THEM MANY MORE QUESTIONS ON WHAT
THEY KNEW ABOUT DONNELLA'S BOY FRIEND. ONE OF THE QUESTIONS THE FBI ASKED
THEM WAS IF THEY KNEW THAT DONNELLA'S BOY FRIEND WAS A DESERTER. THE FBI
ALSO ASKED THEM WHY THEY STOPPED AND LET DONNELLA'S BOY FRIEND OUT BEFORE
ARRIVING AT THE HOSPITAL. EVIDENTLY, SOMEONE HAD PREVIOUSLY INFORMED
THE FBI THAT DONELLA'S BOY FRIEND WAS RIDING WITH THEM TO THE UNIVERSITY
HOSPITAL IN OKLAHOMA CITY. DONNELLA'S BOYFRIEND NEVER SHOWED UP AT THE
      HOSPITAL.

PRESTON AND KAY NEVER FOUND OUT IF DONNELLA'S BOY FRIEND KNEW THAT THE FBI
WAS ON HIS TRAIL WHEN HE ASKED PRESTON TO STOP AND LET HIM OUT. FOR A LONG
TIME, PRESTON AND KAY THOUGHT THAT THE FBI HAD FOLLOWED THEM INTO THE CITY.
AFTER THINKING ABOUT IT, HOWEVER, THEY REALIZED THAT IF THEY HAD BEEN
FOLLOWED, THE FBI WOULD HAVE SEEN THEM STOP AND LET THE GUY OUT ON 23RD
STREET. THE FBI PROBABLY WOULD HAVE NABBED THE GUY RIGHT THEN AND THERE.

FOR MANY YEARS AFTER THE INCIDENT, PRESTON AND KAY WONDERED IF THE GUY
REALLY DID HAVE A PICKUP TRUCK ON 23RD STREET IN OKLAHOMA CITY OR IF HE
SOMEHOW FOUND OUT THAT THE FBI WAS WAITING FOR HIM AT THE HOSPITAL AND
USED THAT AS AN EXCUSE TO GET AWAY. THEN THERE'S THE POSSIBILITY
THAT DONELLA'S BOYFRIEND MAY HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET AWAY FROM HER INSTEAD
OF THE FBI. SEVERAL DECADES NOW HAVE PASSED AND THEY STILL DO NOT
KNOW THE ANSWER TO THESE QUESTIONS. HOWEVER, THEY NOW HAVE MORE
UNANSWERED QUESTIONS. DID THE GUY GET AWAY OR WAS HE CAUGHT? UNDER THE
FREEDOM OF THE INFORMANTION ACT, ONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND OUT WHAT THE
FBI FILES SAY ABOUT THIS INCIDENT. DID DONNELLA EVER SEE HIM AGAIN? MAYBE
SOMEDAY PRESTON AND KAY WILL KNOW THE ANSWER TO THESE QUESTIONS.

AFTER THE FBI FINISHED ASKING THEM QUESTIONS, PRESTON SR., KAY, AND
DONNELLA WENT TO THE INFORMATION DESK IN THE LOBBY OF THE HOSPITAL TO
FIND OUT WHAT ROOM HAMP WAS IN. AT THAT TIME THE HOSPITAL STAFF TOLD
THEM THAT HAMP DIED BEFORE THEY ARRIVED. NOW THEY WONDER IF (1) THE FBI
KNEW WHY PRESTON SR., KAY, AND DONELLA WERE AT THE HOSPITAL? (2) IF THE
FBI HAD INFORMED THE HOSPITAL ABOUT THEIR VISIT AND THAT THEY EXPECTED TO
MAKE AN ARREST? (3) IF THE HOSPITAL STAFF IFORMED THE FBI THAT DONELLA'S
AND KAY'S GRANDFATHER HAD EARLIER PASSED AWAY? (4) IF SO WHY DIDN'T THE
FBI TELL THEM AFTER THEIR INTERVIEW? THESE QUESTIONS REMAIN UNANSWERED
TOO. THE ANSWERS MAYBE IN THE FBI FILES. HOWEVER, PRESTON SR. AND KAY DO
NOT KNOW DONNELLA'S BOYFRIEND'S NAME? THE NAME OR NUMBER OF THE FBI
CASE? SINCE PRESTON SR. WAS A FEDERAL EMPLOYEE AT TINKER AFB, OKLAHOMA
AT THE TIME, THE FBI MAY HAVE THE CASE CROSS REFERENCED TO HIS NAME.
THIS IS POSSIBLE WITH THE SOPHISTICATED COMPUTER SYSTEMS AVAILABLE TODAY,
BUT WOULD IT HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE AT THE TIME IT OCCURRED. THE FREEDOM OF
INFORMATION ACT WAS NOT PASSED UNTIL SEVERAL YEARS AFTER HAMP'S DEATH.

PRESTON NEEDS TO ASK BERTHA WHERE HER NEICE DONELLA IS TODAY? WHAT
DONELLA'S LAST NAME IS NOW? WHAT HER TELEPHONE NO. AND ADDRESS IS? THEN
HE NEEDS TO INTERVIEW HER, WRITE HER, OR CALL HER AND ASK HER THE FOLLOWING
QUESTIONS: FOR GENEALOGICAL PURPOSES WHAT HER CURRENT AND PRIOR HUSBAND'S
NAMES, BIRTH AND MARRIAGE DATES ARE IF SHE'S BEEN MARRIED MORE THAN ONCE?
WHAT HER HUSBAND'S PARENTS NAMES ARE? WHAT HER CHILDREN'S NAMES, BIRTH
DATES, AND BIRTHPLACES ARE? DOES SHE REMEMBER THE INCIDENT AT THE
HOSPITAL IN OKLAHOMA CITY WITH THE FBI WHEN HER GRANDFATHER BUTLER DIED?
IF SHE DOES, WHAT HER SAILOR BOYFRIEND'S NAME WAS? WHERE WAS HE
STATIONED OR WHAT SHIP WAS HE ASSIGNED TO AT THE TIME DONELLA WAS DATING
HIM? DID THE GUY REALLY HAVE A PICKUP TRUCK PARKED ON 23RD STREET IN
OKLAHOMA CITY OR WAS THAT JUST A RUSE SO HE COULD GET AWAY? DOES SHE
KNOW IF HE WAS LATER ARRESTED OR IF HE GOT AWAY? DID HE EVER CONTACT HER
AGAIN? DID SHE EVER SEE HIM AGAIN? DID THE FBI EVER CONTACT HER
AGAIN AFTER THEIR FIRST CONTACT AT THE HOSPITAL? THESE ARE STARTER
QUESTIONS BUT WILL TRIGGER OTHERS AFTER HE LEARNS THE ANSWERS TO THESE.
